Calathea Orbifolia

Calatheas, more commonly known as 'Prayer Plants', have gained popularity through their unusual habit of moving throughout the day. As the sun comes out, the leaves 'bow' to soak up the rays before standing back up at night time. These make great plants for beginners, often quickly reacting when they are unhappy. Equally, they quickly perk up again once happy.

The Orbifolia is a slightly more rare Calathea, its foliage is lighter in colour than many of its cousins. Its broad, dramatic leaves had meant that it's one of the more highly sought after members of the Calathea family.

Light: A bright room with indirect sunlight is best for a calathea. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.

Watering: Water once a week, allowing top soil to dry out before watering again to prevent over-saturation and root rot. Water less often during late autumn and winter months.

Soil: Well draining soil is essential to prevent root rot. If you want to create your own potting mix for your Calatheas it's two parts peat-free soil, one part perlite.

Temperature: Happy between temperatures of 18°c to 29°c, although can tolerate temperatures as low as 15°c.

Repotting: Repot every 12 to 18 months. Increase pot size by 2cm to encourage plant growth.

Plant Care Level: Beginner
